NATASHA RUSSELL
Nested 2 Multibeam Mountains, Mounds, Ripples; Nested 3 - Backscatter Scales: Soft Sands
and Hard Corals, 2017
Hand tinted screen print
Natasha Russell uses drawing and printmaking together with wide-ranging layers of information,
ideas, and narratives to make intricate artworks that give a wide view on a subject, while still revealing
the intricate details. She explores the natural world and the many di昀昀erent ways in which humans try
to make sense of it; from the scienti昀椀c, to the cultural, personal and historical. Russell’s work uses
‘still’ diagrammatic drawings that are mosaicked together into large-scale screen prints, re昀氀ecting the
way that di昀昀erent types of information are layered together and interpreted. The 昀椀nal pieces allow
audiences to get a sense of the process of moving from a wide, ‘low resolution’ macroscopic scale to a
very detailed scale.
Natasha Russell sailed on R/V Falkor August 2017 on the Unraveling Ancient Sea Level Secrets
expedition in Hawaii.
