ELLIE HANNON
Ashmore Reef, 2021
Oil on canvas
39" x 49"
Hannon’s colorful, semi-abstract painting is based on various life and creatures seen in the mesophotic
area of Ashmore Reef o昀昀 Northwest Australia during ROV SuBastian's dives. Her process explores the
role of the imagination as a connection to the visualization of spaces or experiences. The technology
made available to her and overwhelmingly fascinating, absurd, vivid, living, and engaging imagery of
the reefs fed her imagination. Hannon was immediately drawn to painting the landscape as a character,
capturing its personality and diversity - thriving ecosystems with vibrant sketches with pencils, chalk
pastels, and paints.
“I experienced just how in昀椀nite the ocean is, overwhelming in its magnitude. The unveiling of these
unknown reef systems ignited such curiosity, and I was ready to be immersed in this new place.”
Ellie Hannon sailed on R/V Falkor April 2021 during the Australian Mesophotic Coral Examination
expedition in Ashmore Reef Marine Park in the Coral Sea.
