Artist-at-Sea Collection
The ocean influences and sustains all life. Schmidt Ocean
Institute’s Artist-at-Sea program harnesses the power of art and
science to motivate action for our planet and our shared future
through transformative, immersive art experiences. Scientists
illuminate processes fundamental to our lives here on Earth,
and artists are potent storytellers, inspiring people to see and
experience our world in new ways.
Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel, Falkor (too), and our
robotic guide to the deep, ROV SuBastian, are available at no cost
to scientists working to understand our ocean. Life at the seafloor
is shrouded in mystery, but artists can transform these remote
ecosystems into something tangible. With robust collaborations
between artists and some of the world’s leading marine scientists,
our science expeditions offer a range of unique technology-based
ocean research ripe for artistic exploration.
“To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and
flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over
a great salt marsh, to watch the flight of shore birds that
have swept up and down the surf lines of the continents
for untold thousands of years, to see the running of the old
eels and the young shad to the sea, is to have knowledge of
things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can be.”
