GHOST EYES
Sarapiqui, Costa Rica
“The amazing variety of frogs in Costa Rica made me fall in love with
this largest glass frog in the country. One night, I found this individual
near a creek in the deep rainforest.”
Alvaro Cubero
BEYOND THE FRAME
Costa Rican wildlife photographer Alvaro Cubero captured this image
in Sarapiqui, Costa Rica. He says that “this special frog is the biggest
of all the glass frogs of Costa Rica”, and remembers that he “got very
emotional to 昀椀nally be able to photograph it.”
Frogs are believed to have been around for 200 million
years – at least as long as the dinosaurs. There are currently over 6,000 species of frogs worldwide, and scientists are
still discovering new species regularly. Frogs play a crucial role in the health and balance of the ecosystems they
evolve in. They are also often used as an indicator of ecosystem health – declining frog populations can be seen as
an early sign of an endangered ecosystem.
