BEYOND THE FRAME
Photographer Daniel Kordan found himself in the heart of the Mekong
Delta, which he describes as “a place where life 昀氀ows as steadily as the
rivers themselves.” It was early morning, and he recalls “the air [being]
thick with the scent of wet earth and blooming 昀氀owers.” He particularly
likes this image as he 昀椀nds it tells “a story of resilience, of tradition, of
a way of life that has endured for generations”, adding that to him “the
woman in the boat was not just harvesting lilies – she was part of the
delta itself, a living embodiment of its rhythm and spirit.”
The Mekong River is the longest river in Southeast Asia,
昀氀owing from China through Tibet, Myanmar, Laos,
Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam – before entering the
sea just south of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. Once a
year, white and pink lilies 昀氀ourish in the Mekong Delta,
attracting local farmers who come to the river to harvest
these precious 昀氀owers that are then sold on markets and
used as an ingredient in local dishes.
