RED RIVER
Lençóis Maranhenses Red River, Brazil
“It has amazing 昀氀ower-like textures from the sky. The color is explained
by the high concentration of minerals, like iron, in the ground.”
Daniel Kordan
BEYOND THE FRAME
Photographer Daniel Kordan was traveling through the Lençóis
Maranhenses National Park in the northeastern Brazilian state of
Maranhão when he captured this stunning image. The park is known
for its vast sand dunes and seasonal lagoons that form after rainfall. The
Rio Negro, rich in minerals and iron, runs through the park.
Daniel says 昀氀ying over the Rio Negro in a Cessna plane with the door
wide open was “an exhilarating and humbling experience”, adding
that “the vast sand dunes and winding river below seemed almost like
an abstract painting, creating intricate patterns that resembled glacier
rivers or 昀氀ower petals.”
Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is not only famous
for its sand dunes and lagoons, but also for its diverse
wildlife. Migratory birds are known to visit the lagoons
during certain times of the year, and other species remain
year-round. A variety of herons, sandpipers, egrets, and
king昀椀shers can be found throughout the wetlands and
dunes. The park is also home to many other species
including giant anteaters, capybaras, caimans and jaguars.
