BEYOND THE FRAME
Stockholm-based photographer and cinematographer Alex Dawson
captured this stunning shot in eastern Greenland, near the village of
Tasiilaq. He was travelling with freediver Anna Von Boetticher. This site
is only a few meters deep but they had to work for over two hours to get
through the 80cm thick ice to access the whale bones.
While this whale was consumed by humans, whale carcasses (also known as whale falls) are crucial to the health
and balance of marine ecosystems. When a whale dies, the
body sinks to the bottom of the ocean and provides nutrients for a variety of deep sea species, from large scavengers
such as octopus, crabs and eels to microscopic bacteria. A
single whale can become a source of food for other ocean
creatures and bacteria that can last up to 50 years.
