SPOTTED EAGLE RAY
Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia
“Cruising elegantly through the shallow lagoon reef is an eagle ray. Its
spots glow in the sunlight, contrasted against its dark skin. These gentle
rays feed on mollusks and crustaceans, crushing their shells with their
tiny teeth.”
Brooke Pyke
Spotted eagle rays can be found worldwide in warm waters. They can
grow to over three meters wide, making them the second largest eagle
rays after mantas. They are considered a coastal species and can often be
seen around coral reefs, but they can also be found up to 60 meters deep.
When swimming close to the surface, they can leap out of the water with
their entire bodies.
