GREENLAND
The Arctic is a frozen ocean surrounded by land, and it has
been covered in ice for the past 5,500 years. Its cold waters
are rich in nutrients and home to thriving ecosystems,
from tiny phytoplankton and shrimp to giant blue whales,
orcas and narwhals. On land, a wide range of animals,
including polar bears and reindeer, can be found across
the Arctic. Many of them are white – polar bears but also
Arctic foxes, beluga whales, or snowy owls. This helps
them camou昀氀age in heavy snow and ice.
The Arctic is currently warming faster than anywhere
else in the world, at a rate of almost four times the global
average.
Re昀氀ecting on his trip, Andy Mann said that “access to remote and untouched
parts of our planet is a real privilege. It’s like going back in time 1000 years and
seeing nature in balance. You also realize how our day to day life impacts far
away places. If we can’t save the last wild kingdoms on Earth, can we really save
ourselves?”, ending with a reminder that “we are all part of nature.”
