ECHOES OF THE ARCTIC
Svalbard, Norway
“Believe, and it will happen! While on location at the North Pole, I said
to my expedition leader that I wished I could photograph a polar bear
walking on a glacier at sunset. He smiled and agreed we should dream
big. For the 昀椀rst 昀椀ve days of the expedition, we didn’t see any polar bears.
But timing is everything, and patience is key. Looking at this photo now
brings back the same feelings I had when I was capturing it.”

BEYOND THE FRAME
This photo was taken by Michael Haluwana during an expedition
to the North Pole in Kvitøya, an island in Svalbard. He says the Arctic
“can be like another world.” During this trip, he had “high hopes of
encountering, photographing and 昀椀lming polar bears”, noting it is never
guaranteed you will see them. Luckily for him, his dream came true.
This photograph was his 昀椀rst polar bear encounter.
Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago located in the Arctic
Ocean, roughly halfway between mainland Norway and
the North Pole. It is home to the world’s northernmost
urban community, Longyearbyen, as well as over 2,100
glaciers, 170 plant species, and many mammals including
reindeers, Arctic foxes, belugas, walruses and polar bears.
