Scientists believe that sharks 昀椀rst appeared in the ocean about 455 million years ago, long before
dinosaurs. Despite their reputation, only a dozen of the more than 300 species of sharks have been
involved in attacks on humans. Most sharks are not dangerous for humans, but we are a threat for
them – they often accidentally get caught in 昀椀shing gear and are also hunted deliberately for their 昀椀ns,
which are consumed as a delicacy in some parts of the world.
