European ground squirrels can be found throughout
southeastern Europe. They go into hibernation every year
from August or September onwards – and when they do,
their body temperature drops from 37°C to just 6°C. As
they come out of hibernation in the spring, they weigh
about half of what they did a few months earlier. They are
known for sitting up on their short hind legs to keep an eye
on their surroundings and spot potential threats.
