BEYOND THE FRAME
Wildlife photographer Dhir Jakharia was travelling through the
Amboseli National Park in Kenya when he managed to capture this
shot. He says the park is his favorite park to photograph at, “due to the
serene landscapes & the backdrop of the mighty Mt. Kilimanjaro.” This
particular elephant is one of the “super tuskers” of Amboseli. A “super
tusker” is an elephant who has very large tusks.
African elephants are the largest animals walking on
Earth, and can be found in 37 countries throughout the
African continent. These impressive creatures play a key
role in the balance of their ecosystems and the survival of
other species – for example, in central African forests up
to 30% of tree species rely on elephants to help with seed
dispersal and germination. There are currently about
415,000 African elephants left in the wild, down from
three to 昀椀ve million a century ago.
