BEYOND THE FRAME
Wildlife photographer Nathan Moine captured this shot of an
orangutan washing her face in a pose that looks like a classic “facepalm”
on the island of Borneo. He remembers the encounter with this majestic
creature and says that “what amazed [him] was the emotion conveyed
through her eyes and the depth of her gaze”, adding that “her behavior
felt strikingly similar to ours as humans.” Re昀氀ecting on his work, Nathan
argues that “as photographers, our greatest role is to inspire people to
fall in love with our planet. This connection fosters genuine action and
a deeper understanding of the messages we share, ultimately leading
to its protection”, adding that “one of the most impactful things we can
do to create long-term, positive change is strive to understand the world
around us.”
The name orangutan means “person of the forest” in the
Malay language. These great apes that can only be found
on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra share over 96% of
our genes.
