CATCH THE STAR
Uyuni Salar Flats, Bolivia
“Panorama of Milky Way with me standing in the middle with a
headlamp (camera on a timer). Salt 昀氀ats 昀椀lled up with water so you can
see stars everywhere - even under your feet!”
Daniel Kordan
BEYOND THE FRAME
Landscape photographer Daniel Kordan took this shot at the Uyuni
Salt Flats in Bolivia. He says he was drawn to this surreal landscape to
capture the night sky. He remembers how the salt 昀氀ats, especially when
昀氀ooded, o昀昀er an “almost otherworldly re昀氀ection of the stars, creating
a perfect canvas for astrophotography”, adding that “it’s a place where
the sky and Earth meet in the most magical way. It’s hard to believe your
eyes and senses while standing in the middle of these salt 昀氀at 昀氀oods by
night.”
The Uyuni Salt Flats (Salar de Uyuni) are the world’s largest salt 昀氀ats, stretching over 10,000 kilometers of the Altiplano Mountain Range in the Andes. The salt 昀氀ats were
formed following the evaporation of prehistoric lakes that
used to be in the area. They are so large they can even be
seen from space, and are used to calibrate satellites.
