Habitat loss is one of the main threats lions are currently
facing. While these majestic creatures used to roam in Africa but also Asia and even parts of Europe, lions are now
found almost exclusively in fragments of sub-Saharan Africa – which represents just 8% of their former habitat. Lions are considered a keystone species, which means they
play an important role in the health of the ecosystems they
evolve in by keeping zebra, bu昀昀alo, gira昀昀e, and antelope
populations in check. Without them, the entire system
would be thrown out of balance, which would result in
other extinctions as well as the proliferation of non-native
invasive species.
