The Surin Elephant Sanctuary in Thailand is a place where
rescued elephants can roam freely in a natural and ethical
environment. The sanctuary o昀昀ers visitors the chance to observe
elephants in a responsible way. Re昀氀ecting on his visit, Daniel
says that “many of these elephants have been rescued from
di昀케cult pasts, and witnessing their newfound freedom is both
heartwarming and humbling.” He remembers how the elephants
played in the mud and formed bonds with each other, which
made him appreciate the mission of the sanctuary.
Asian Elephants have a life expectancy of around 60 years
in the wild, and studies estimate that this number is cut in
half when they are kept in captivity. They communicate
through trumpet calls, body language and scent, as well as
vibrations through the ground. Elephants can spend up to
three quarters of their day eating, as they need to consume
around 105 kg of food every day.
