Remote big-wall climbing
Emmy-nominated director, National Geographic photographer and marine
conservationist Andy Mann aims to tell the story of our rapidly changing
planet through his work. He captured this shot while on a big-wall climbing
expedition, as he was shuttling gear to shore in a small Zodiac boat to establish
a basecamp in a remote set of fjords known as Thor’s Land. A majestic and
seemingly curious polar bear showed up from behind an iceberg and swam
alongside him and his partner for what he described as “a brief and wonderfully
intense moment.” Andy said he “felt a deep sense of empathy for the bear”,
adding that “to witness the rapidly changing arctic ecosystem during the 12
[visits since he] 昀椀rst visited the Arctic in 2013 is a scary sight to behold.”
